PTZ CCTV Cameras Explained for Yards and Large Sites

What PTZ actually does

PTZ means the camera can pan left and right, tilt up and down, and zoom optically. On a warehouse yard, school field or long driveway that can follow a vehicle after an alert. It is not a substitute for cameras that already cover the gate, the pedestrian door and the loading bay in a fixed frame.

The coverage gap

A PTZ can only look at one place at a time unless it is running a patrol tour. If an incident happens behind it while it is zoomed on the street, that area is not recorded in detail. Fixed cameras should still hold the choke points. PTZ is extra, not the whole design.

Operators and presets

Presets, tours and motion-triggered patrols only help if someone will use them, or if the recorder can trigger a sensible move. A homeowner who never opens the live view rarely needs a PTZ. A site with a guard room or a monitored station may.

Practical specification

CapeCore specifies PTZ where the site is large enough and the client will use it. Mounting, lightning protection, network bandwidth and a stable bracket matter as much as the zoom ratio. We use market hardware, not theatrical control-room graphics.
