PoE CCTV Cabling: Power, Distance and Clean Terminations

Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.

PoE in one sentence

Power over Ethernet sends DC power and data on the same twisted-pair cable. A PoE switch or an NVR with PoE ports feeds the camera. You still need a stable AC supply and a UPS at the rack.

Distance is physics

Standard Ethernet is designed around 100 metres of channel. Longer runs need a midspan, fibre, or a camera that officially supports extended PoE — not a hope and a cheap coupler in a ceiling void. Voltage drop on thin cable shows up as reboots at night when infrared LEDs draw more current.

Outdoor and lightning

External cameras need shielded cable where interference or surge is likely, proper earthing, and glands that keep water out of the RJ45. A camera that “fails in the first winter storm” is often a wet termination.

Label the rack

CapeCore labels ports and keeps a simple camera schedule. That is what makes servicing possible later, including from Parow Industrial.
