Indoor vs Outdoor CCTV: Housings, Privacy and Placement

Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.

Outdoor ratings are real

An indoor camera on a Cape Town stoep will fail. Look for a genuine outdoor housing, sealed glands and a mount that sheds water. Coastal sites need extra attention to corrosion. Do not treat a plastic indoor dome as weatherproof because it sat in a garden display.

Indoor cameras still need a purpose

Lobbies, till lines, plant rooms and passages are typical indoor uses. Pointing a camera at a staff kitchen, a bathroom approach or a neighbour’s yard is a design error as well as a privacy problem. Keep views on your property and on the openings you intend to protect.

Audio and signage

Some cameras record audio. That is a separate decision from video. If audio is enabled, people on the property should know. CapeCore can disable microphone features when they are not required.

One design, two environments

A coherent recorder can hold indoor and outdoor cameras together. The housing, the lens and the privacy of the view are specified per camera, not copied from a kit box.
