Garage Door Safety: Edges, Beams and Auto-Reverse

Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.

A motor is strong

An automated door can injure a person or crush a vehicle if it closes on an obstruction. Safety is not an accessory pack. Photoelectric beams across the opening, a sensitive reverse on the motor, and (where the door type needs them) safety edges are part of a competent install.

Auto-close needs beams

Do not enable auto-close on a family garage without working beams and a tested reverse. Pets, children and shopping trolleys will be in that plane.

Test monthly

Block the beam with a cardboard box and confirm the door stops or reverses. If it does not, disconnect auto-close and call for service. CapeCore can test and repair existing motors.

Manual release

You still need a labelled manual release for load-shedding or a failed motor, and a way to lock the door if the motor is disengaged.
