Analogue HD CCTV: When Coax Systems Still Make Sense
Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.
What analogue HD is
Older CCTV used analogue video over coaxial cable into a DVR. Later HD-over-coax formats (often sold as TVI, CVI or AHD) send a high-definition picture down the same style of cable. They are not the same as a network IP camera, but they are no longer the blurry systems of the early 2000s.
When keeping coax is rational
If a building already has sound coaxial runs to the right positions, an HD DVR and compatible cameras can be a lower-disruption upgrade. You avoid pulling new Cat6 through finished ceilings. You also keep a simpler point-to-point video path that does not share the office LAN.
Limits compared with IP
IP cameras generally offer more flexible lenses, analytics, remote apps and easier multi-site viewing. Cable length, power injectors and switch design still have to be done properly. Analogue HD is not “obsolete by default”; it is a different trade-off.
CapeCore’s approach
CapeCore will say when an existing coax plant is worth using and when a move to IP will serve the site better. We do not force a full rip-out to sell new cable if the old runs are still fit for the job.
