Protecting Server Rooms and Technical Plant

Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.

A server room or electrical room is a small space with a large consequence. The brief starts with the asset and the enclosure.

Applicable SANS standards

Detection: SANS 10139. Gaseous suppression: SANS 14520. Occupancy and building fire measures: SANS 10400-T. Access to the room: SANS 10222-2.

Questions homeowners often ask

We keep the NAS under the stairs — do we need this?

A domestic NAS is not a server room. Keep it ventilated, off the floor, and do not store paint next to it. Gas suppression is for a dedicated enclosure.

Must the door be fire-rated?

Possibly, depending on occupancy and SANS 10400-T. That is a building question, not a camera question.

General guidance for Cape Town and Western Cape homes and estates. Confirm the current SANS edition, municipal by-law and any insurer condition with a competent person before treating an answer as a legal duty on your property.
