What Practical Home and Building Automation Actually Includes
Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.
Automation is useful when people still use it six months later. Lighting, motorised gates, access, CCTV and a few building functions can share a clear interface.
Applicable SANS standards
There is no glamour “smart home” SANS. The parts that matter are electrical safety, SANS 10222-2 where access control is involved, SANS 10222-3 where the gate or fence is electrified, and fire occupancy rules in SANS 10400-T so that automation never blocks escape. Extra-low-voltage gadgets do not excuse unsafe mains wiring.
Questions homeowners often ask
Should the whole house be on an app?
Only the functions you will actually use: gate, selected lights, camera viewing. A scene for every curtain is how systems get abandoned.
What happens when the internet is down?
Local control at the gate and a physical override must still work. Do not lock the family out of their own house.
Can automation replace an alarm?
It can present cameras and gates. Detection of intrusion or fire is still a specified security or fire system.
