Keys copy themselves. Access control issues a credential that can be withdrawn, time-limited and recorded. That is the core improvement in offices, estates and managed buildings — and it is equally useful on a home gate.
Applicable SANS standards
SANS 10222-2 is the access-control part of the electrical security installations series. Door hardware, power supplies and cabling still have to be installed as safe electrical work. Electric locking on emergency-escape doors must not trap people; fire occupancy rules in SANS 10400-T take priority over convenience.
Questions homeowners often ask
Is a keypad on the garage enough?
A shared PIN that never changes is only slightly better than a hidden key. Prefer credentials you can delete when a domestic worker, tenant or contractor leaves.
Should the gate open during a fire?
Escape and emergency-vehicle access must be designed with the fire brief, not as an afterthought. Do not lock people in.
Do I need biometrics at home?
Usually not. Cards, tags or a well-managed phone credential are enough for most houses if the lock and power are sound.
