When a Server Room Needs Gas Fire Suppression

Guidance only. Verify any statutory or insurer requirement against current official South African sources. CapeCore does not publish unverified legal claims.

Water puts fire out. It also ruins servers, switchgear and control equipment. Some technical rooms are therefore designed around clean-agent gas suppression instead of sprinklers aimed at the rack.

Applicable SANS standards

Gaseous fire-extinguishing systems are specified in the SANS 14520 series. Detection that releases the system must still be designed, installed and serviced to SANS 10139. The need for specialised suppression in a particular occupancy is read from SANS 10400-T together with the asset risk. Enclosure integrity (whether the gas will stay in the room) is part of a proper design — a leaking ceiling tile is not a detail.

Questions homeowners often ask

Does a home office cupboard need gas suppression?

Almost never. Gas suppression is for rooms where water damage or downtime would be severe — typically a dedicated server or electrical room with a closable enclosure.

Is it safe for people?

Occupied rooms need warning, delay and a way out before discharge. That procedure is part of the standard, not a sticker on the cylinder.

Can I put a cylinder in the passage?

No. Location, signage, pipework and detection are a designed system.
