How Electric Fencing Enhances Perimeter Security

Electric fencing is widely used on South African residential, estate, commercial and industrial perimeters. It is a deterrent and a detection layer, usually mounted on a wall or structure, and is strongest when gates, lighting and CCTV are designed with it.
Applicable SANS standards
The Electrical Machinery Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act require non-lethal electric fence installations to comply with SANS 10222-3. Energiser safety is addressed by SANS 60335-2-76. After installation, alteration, extension or (in many property transfers) an electric fence system certificate must be issued by a registered person. Warning signs, earthing, clearances and electromagnetic compatibility are part of that standard — not optional extras.
Questions homeowners often ask
Do I need a certificate when I sell my house?
The Electrical Machinery Regulations require an electric fence system certificate in defined situations, including after installation and often on transfer. Ask the registered installer and your conveyancer; do not assume a verbal “it’s fine”.
Can I add strands myself?
Extending or altering the fence can void the certificate and can be unlawful if it no longer meets SANS 10222-3. Use a registered installer.
Why does the fence click after rain?
Vegetation, slack wires and poor insulators earth the fence. That is a maintenance problem, not a feature. Clear growth and have the tension and earthing checked.
